Because you will notice that the more mad you think about your meaning, the more votes you get for it. The game was released in the United States in the 1980s and has sold tens of millions of copies. And that... is certainly not nonsense!

You play Balderdash over several rounds. Each round the leader reads an unknown but existing Dutch word. It's up to the other players to guess its meaning. You can earn points by writing down the correct meaning and by letting others guess your meaning.
